I Want My MTV
I took a graphic design class during the Fall of 2020 which kickstarted my switch to pursue a creative career. For our final project, students were given the task to reimagine a poster for an already existing ad campaign. I hold this particular project dear to me as it was during this time that I fell in love with the process of concepting and executing a visual idea from scratch; I figured it’d be a process I would like to experiment with for a long time. For my project, I chose to redo the campaigns for MTV’s Video Music Awards. Contrary to its bold colors and eye popping graphics as seen in today’s campaigns, I used nostalgia as an appeal in hopes that it would evoke a reminiscent feeling of flipping open a magazine and watching the rise of MTV nation for the first time.
AKIRA REDONE
Shortly after getting hired as an intern for an ad agency, I began an in-depth training process to refine my skills in compositing images which included masking, retouching, and treating images. I knew I needed to hone in on my skills in a short time period in order to survive in such a fast-paced work environment so I gave myself the task of creating posters during my free time in order to practice what I’ve learned. For one set, I reimagined a live action version of AKIRA using photos found on Unsplash. I took major inspiration of the grunginess of the already existing art and wanted to translate that in a graphic way while still remaining (somewhat) photo-real.
